  • Oorlog Frankenstein: Digital Stowaways
If you've ever seen Francois van Coke on stage with Fokofpolisiekar or Van Coke Kartel, it looks like he’s fighting a war. So I assumed Oorlog Frankenstein (Warring Frankenstein) was a not-so-subtle reference to the battling frontman. But it’s not. The less interesting story is: it’s the name of one of their songs (about fighting a war with yourself). Put together "like a boy band," by Cape Town design agency The President, Peach van Pletzen (Yesterday’s Pupil, Shu) and Francois van Coke’s relationship has blossomed. From the play 2-21 (co-written by Fokofpolisiekar and aKING guitarist Hunter Kennedy), to the new Van Coke Kartel album (Skop, Skiet en Donner), to Oorlog Frankenstein. So far, as Oorlog Frankenstein, the duo has released a limited edition five track EP on USB flashdisk. And they’re so not serious, they’re fucking serious. Who is Oorlog Frankenstein?Francois: It's f*cking me and Peach. Hunter worked with us in the beginning, then he had to commit himself to aKING. Me and Peach kind of ran with it from there. I didn’t do that much. It’s actually him, I'm just the singer. But where does the name come from? Francois: We've got a tune that’s about fighting a war with yourself, kind of a thing. The melody line he (Peach) plays at the beginning, on the… I don't know what, sounded like Frankenstein. Peach: It's eerie. Francois: So we called the tune "Oorlog Frankenstein." When the play finished, we wanted to carry on playing these tunes and it was the first name that came up. Is Oorlog Frankenstein a real band or a passing phase? Francois: It's a fake band. Peach: It's a social experiment. Francois: It's not serious, but it’s F*CKING serious. Peach: It's so not serious… Francois: That it's F*CKING serious! Which makes life easier, because when people say, "Why don't you respond to your Facebook shit?" we say, "We’re not serious." Have you always been fans of electronic music? Francois: Not at all. I kind of like Justice now. Peach: Maybe, for the last… five years. Francois: I like rock music actually. I don’t know shit about electronic music. Why do you think so many rockers end up making electronic music? Francois: F*ck, I don’t know. Moving with the times I guess. Peach: Technology. Francois: I scheme – this might come off f*cking hectic – but I scheme you can’t just make straight rock music anymore. There's too much shit happening. Peach: Try to include the robot. If you played Oorlog Frankenstein to Francois from New World Inside and Peach from Shu, do you think they’d like it? Francois: Maybe, because he liked Nine Inch Nails. Peach: I would have thought, "Ha… pretty weird." But it would have grown on me. It's inevitable. What kind of music were you listening to in the New World Inside/Shu days? Francois: Pop punk: Alkaline Trio, MxPx…Peach: Deftones, Meatloaf. Francois, what did you think the first time you heard ex-New World Inside bandmates Gerald van Wyk and Raffael Rueckert as Codec vs. The Sound? Francois: I've never actually heard them, I’ve only heard The Sound. It was pretty cool. I scheme Rafi and Gerald… I don’t know…Peach: It was weird? Francois: It wasn't weird. I think it was a natural progression for them. I listened to rock, they started listening to electronic music. How are you guys enjoying this budding bromance you've got going on? Francois: We're digging it. I love Peach. We were actually put together like a boy band. Peach: By The President. Francois: And I feel blessed that I know this guy. It’s a fucking good thing to make new friends. Peach: F*ck yeah. How does Wynand feel about being left out this time? Francois: He feels good about it. He hates electronic music. But he likes what Peach did for the Van Coke album. How did you enjoy recording Skop, Skiet en Donner? Francois: It was bef*ck. Peach: I loved it. I learnt a lot doing it. Francois: Me and Wynand have never worked with a drummer that’s had as much influence as Peach, because he’s obviously the producer as well. We don’t know fuck all about beats or anything, so it was really cool working with him. It was a new experience. I think Van Coke Kartel needed a gearshift or whatever. What about replacing Justin Kruger? Francois: He's not actually replacing Justin. Van Coke Kartel will always be me and Wynand working with different people. Hopefully Peach will be onboard to produce the next album. We’ll see. Van Coke Kartel will always play with… anyone who is the best. So no hard feelings then? Peach: No, him and I, we talk a lot on Facebook Chat. Francois: He's playing two shows with us this week coming. Peach: Justin's trying to hook me up with one of his model friends. When he comes up to Jo'burg, he wants to meet me for a double date buddy. How did you guys end up in Argentina? Francois: The same people that hooked us up, The President, opened a branch there – I don’t know if it’s a branch, an office? We (VCK) played their launch party. We played to a couple hundred people, but Peach went before us and played to 10,000 people. Peach: It was ridiculous. Francois: He’s big there. Peach: Huge, ha ha.
